Wooden Storage Sheds - The All-Time Favorite Shed

Wooden Storage Sheds

Of all the shed types and designs, perhaps the oldest - and most beloved - is the humble wooden shed. Wooden storage sheds have been the preferred means of storage for gardeners and outdoors enthusiasts for a long time -- and for good reason.

Wooden Sheds: Looking Good Outdoors

The main reason, I suppose, that many people choose wooden storage sheds over metal, plastic or vinyl sheds is that they just look better in the out-of-doors. Metal sheds look too 'industrial' and plastic sheds look like a child's playhouse (especially if you get one in bright yellow, red and blue).

Many people spend time outdoors because they want to reconnect with nature, with their roots - and wooden storage sheds blend in with the environment. To help with that blending in, you can paint or stain the wood in outdoorsy colors: greens, browns, and rusty reds work well on wooden storage sheds.

Caring For Wooden Storage Sheds

Of course, wooden storage sheds are made from a natural product, and over time wood can rot, warp, splinter, be attacked by termites and wasps, or bored into by garden pests. This means that you will need to schedule regular maintenance on your wooden garden shed.

You should make sure to clear away any plants, leaves, sticks, dirt or stones that may accumulate next to the sides - or on the roof - of your wooden storage shed. Allowing these materials to accumulate on wooden storage sheds can cause them to rot or wear.

If you live in an area that is subject to insect infestation, harsh weather, lots of rain, fungus , mold and mildew you may want to use treated or pressurized wood. Wooden storage sheds made from treated woods will last years longer than those made from plain (untreated) wood.

If you have a wooden storage shed that is not made from treated wood, you can achieve a similar effect from applying various types of preservatives. Wood preservatives applied topically cannot achieve the same level of protection as pressure-treating, but it is a good alternative.

Add-Ons For Wooden Storage Sheds

One disadvantage of metal and plastic sheds is that it is hard to modify them - they are usually designed to include certain components, and it may be very difficult, for example, to put in a window, in a plastic or metal shed, if no provision has been made for it.

On the other hand, modifying wooden storage sheds is much easier. You can simply cut, nail and attach things like windows, shutters, gutters, trim and the like - with no special effort or special tools - to any wooden storage shed.

Properly cared for, wooden storage sheds will last for decades, providing you with a great environmentally-friendly storage option.
